101 Workouts for Women Review

Review by Amy Denning
Fitness guides can be a great resource for creating successful workouts, especially when gym boredom sets in. Recently I decided it was time for a new routine and, after thumbing through a number of fitness books, I discovered my new favorite resource: 101 Workouts for Women. This guide, created by the editors of Muscle & Fitness Hers, the most comprehensive, user friendly and versatile book I have found thus far.

Most fitness guides are rigid--providing an illustrated workout regimen, usually attached to a calendar for the reader to follow throughout the entire program. These guides can be great, especially for people who like structure and direction. 101 Workouts for Women, however, provides a variety of routine combinations, variations and options dependent upon your skill level, individual goals, needs and time constraints.
101 Workouts for Women’s format is what makes it effective for virtually any reader. Routines are broken down by muscle group, strategy (push/pull) and equipment (free weights, machines, bands, balance balls). All of the exercises are intense, and many include supersets and drop sets. This book is not intended for anyone who is afraid of a challenge, or afraid lifting weights
The trick to finding success with this guide is experimentation. My first attempt at using one of the routines from 101 Workouts for Women wasn’t completely successful. I chose a program that involves working out four days a week, combining lower body and cardio exercises on two of the days, and upper body and core exercises on the other two days. The lower body routine was intense, combining four drop sets of six different leg exercises. After completing the lower body routine, I found it virtually impossible to follow it up with the prescribed 25 to 35 minutes of cardio. This program is a bit too challenging for me at my current level of fitness. However, there are many others to choose from in the meantime.
101 Workouts for Women is a great resource for women who are looking to create workouts to meet their individual needs, or for those who want to add variety and intensity to their current workouts.
