How Much to Eat

An important Healthy Eating Tip is to accurately determine How Much to Eat. In terms of counting calories too much of any food can be a bad thing. Even healthy food. Technically how much to eat or a serving size is calculated in weight. I’m sure you’ve read (even on this site), “eat 8oz. of this or 4 oz. of that”. In our everyday lives, however, it is not realistic for you to have a portable food scale when on the go. Therefore, it is helpful to picture a serving size. The following healthy eating tip will help you determine how much to eat and get you on your way to Healthy Living.

How Much to Eat - Picture a Serving Size

Meat: A serving size of meat should be about 4 ounces. This should look about the same size as the palm of your hand.

Cheese: A serving size of cheese should be about 1 ounce. This should look like your pointer finger (thickness and length).

Whole Grains and/or Bread: A serving size is usually one piece if pre-sliced or else the size of a deck of cards.

Pasta: A serving size of pasta should be about 1 cup. This should look like the size of a softball.

Dessert: A serving size of dessert should be about a ½ cup. This should look like the size of a tennis ball.

Vegetables and Fruit: A serving size is generally one piece or a cup. Vegetables and fruit are lower in caloric density and should be half of your meal. A quarter of the meal should be whole grain and a quarter should be meat. When eating vegetables and fruit try to fill half your plate.
