Many of us think that the only way we can burn more calories to lose weight is by hitting the gym or going for a run. Although a jog or a bike ride can burn more calories in a big chunk, there are other ways we can burn more calories throughout the day in small chunks. These small chunks add up and at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is how much we burned total. One way to burn more calories is to take the stairs.

Taking the stairs is another great healthy habit. I know, I know it can be a pain! Why take the steps when there is a perfectly good elevator right here? Because you can burn more calories if you take the stairs! In fact you can burn up to 10 calories for each flight of steps that you take. It simply amazes me how some people will take an elevator to go up or down one flight of steps. By the time you wait for the elevator to arrive, you could have already burned 10 calories and have been closer to your destination.
Think about how many more calories you can burn just by taking the stairs. If you walk a flight of steps five times a day that is 50 calories. That’s 5 pounds a year! Take a break a couple of times a day at work to walk a few flights in the stairwell. You will quickly see that walking 5 flights a day is nothing.
