Maintaining motivation to hit the gym is one of the biggest obstacles you will face in achieving your fitness goals. As time passes, it will be easier for you to make excuses not to hit the gym. “I had a rough day”, “I’m too tired”, “I’ll workout extra hard tomorrow”, are only a few examples of common excuses you may use when you are in a workout rut and motivation is lacking. One way to stop the excuses and maintain motivation is to take a workout partner.

Fitness Habit | Take a Workout Partner

Take a workout partner with you when you workout. It is a great healthy habit and a way to stay motivated. A workout partner can keep you accountable and motivated. The both of you can motivate each other when one of you isn’t “feeling it”. You will be surprised at how having someone to workout with will keep you going. There are a few things to keep in mind when taking a workout partner.

1.) Set Rules

From the beginning you and your workout partner should set rules. For instance, set a rule that neither of you can use any excuses about how tired you are, nor how you don’t have time, nor how you will make it up another time. If you do try to use these excuses, then your partner will hold your feet to the fire and make you go, period. You can even write out a contract. It may seem a bit much but trust me, having something in writing will give you that extra push to stay motivated.

2.) Set a Schedule

Set a schedule that works for you and your workout partner. Write down the schedule and post it in a place you will see every day. If there is a special event or a vacation scheduled that won’t allow you to meet your scheduled time, make sure you put it on the calendar and share it with your workout partner.

3.) You don’t have to do the same workout

A workout partner doesn’t necessarily mean that you follow each other around the gym. You can have your own routine. As long as you are both there at the same time and working out is all that matters. If you actually workout together, that is great, but it’s not something you have to do. Not everyone is on the same fitness level.

4.) Be Selective

Do not just choose a workout partner because they are your best friend. Make sure your workout partner has the same end goal and will hold you accountable. Select someone who is dedicated and you are sure will not let you down. What’s the point of having a workout partner if they will not keep you accountable and motivated?

Staying motivated is definitely a Healthy Living obstacle but not impossible to overcome. Take a workout partner to maintain motivation. For other ways to stay motivated read our article on How to Stay Motivated.
